Nelson’s Green Brier Holiday Nog

During the holidays, you can whip up something pretty darn close (they have not yet located the original recipe) to what Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery founder, Charles Nelson, did back in the pre-prohibition days.  Then you can sip and savor memories from when Nelson’s was one of the country’s top producers of Tennessee Whiskey.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Nelson’s Green Brier Tennessee Whiskey
  • 6 eggs (separate whites and yolks while the eggs are cold)
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 4 dashes aromatic bitters
  • 2 dashes cardamom bitters
  • Garnish – nutmeg and/or cinnamon and cinnamon sticks

Directions

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat egg yolks until they are light in color and then slowly beat in 1 cup of sugar and keep beating until the sugar crystals dissolve.
  • Mix in the milk and heavy cream, whiskey, cinnamon, nutmeg, and bitters and place in the refrigerator to chill.
  • In a separate large mixing bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form and then slowly beat in the brown sugar. Beat until hard peaks form.
  • Fold the chilled mixture from step 2 into the egg whites and, again, cover and place in the refrigerator to chill.
  • After chilled, serve in beautiful glassware and garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon and a cinnamon stick.
